What can talking animals teach us about government and power? Quite a lot, it turns out. NoViolet Bulawayo’s satirical novel Glory whisks readers to a fictional African country, where an oppressive regime has just fallen. All of the characters are animals—donkeys, sheep, cows, dogs, cats—that tell stories about the rigged elections, censorship, betrayal, and ruin they have witnessed. Glory, inspired by the real-life 2017 coup that ousted Zimbabwe’s long-time president, and shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize, is an imaginative and brave look at survival and opportunity. —Angela HauptB
